KINROSS Tasiast Mine: the Mauritanian's treasure

Since 2010, Kinross Gold Corporation has been managing the Tasiast gold mine via its fully-owned subsidiary Tasiast Mauritanie Limited SA (TMLSA).

Tasiast is an open-pit operation located 300 miles northeast of Nouakchott in the Inchiri area, amidst immense desert plains. A processing facility and heap leaching facilities are used to recover the gold that is present in the ore that is taken out of the mines. The estimated total gold reserves of Tasiast is 5.055 million ounces, both proved and probable.

Tasiast employs almost 4,000 people on a permanent basis, both direct and indirect, for TMLSA and its subcontractors. Mauritanians make up to than 97% of TMLSA’s workforce. To extract the valuable yellow metal, teams skilled in all facets of the mining business work day and night, seven days a week. In 2023, the mine produced 620,793 ounces of gold, or 17.6 tonnes, an increase of 15% over the previous year, setting new records.

The 24K project, which expanded ore processing capacity to 24,000 tonnes per day, enabled Tasiast to achieve record production. Kinross has made significant investments in Tasiast’s essential infrastructure with the goal of making it a mine that satisfies the highest international standards. The mine is outfitted with tools and infrastructure that allow workers to work there in total safety while reducing its environmental impact as much as possible.

The effects of the mining go far beyond the Tasiast region. Because of the mine’s considerable positive effects on the growth of local people and the economy of Mauritania, Kinross—which is dedicated to ethical mining that creates sustainable value—is a prominent partner for the country. Tasiast has contributed around MRU 631 million (US$18.35 million) to social and community development initiatives between 2011 and 2022.

With signature initiatives like its mobile clinic, the provision of clean drinking water, and its part in the upkeep and expansion of the Banc d’Arguin National Park (PNBA), the mine is devoted to supporting local communities.
